I have been tutoring professionally for more than 25 years. I have a teaching background that includes junior high school, high school, and college. My educational background is in behavior biology, which means I look at learning as a physiological process involving sensory and motor skills. Because of my background,I teach students using lots of color, diagrams, outlines, and other tools that make learning more natural and accomplished with less effort. I teach students to use all of their senses so that information is stored in multiple areas of the brain and then practice retrieval of the information until it is stored in both their short term and long term memories.
I love learning and I love teaching and I believe both should be enjoyable. The techniques I use have had great success with my students. My goal is always to empower my students with the skills they need to be in control of their lives. Every academic area I teach is also infused with study and organizational skills. I teach students how to take big or small projects and break them down into a manageable set of progressive steps with self-imposed deadlines that keep them ahead of their class. When kids are in control of what is happening at school their self-confidence and attitude soar. Kids don't have to be scared and feeling hopeless, they can be successful and even leaders. My students go from C's, D's, and even F's to A's and B's. The first thing I do is diagnose the problem(s),learn how the student processes information, what's missing in his/her background, and what his/her teacher's expectations are for that class. Then I can create a plan of action that quickly produces positive results and gets the student into a pattern of growth and success.
