Tutoring Style and/or Experience
In New Jersey I was a science teacher at Perth Amboy Vocational School, grades 10, 12, and adult school. This is an inner city district with a high percentage of classified youth. My task was to develop interdisciplinary curricula to inspire the students to be successful in science, with the ultimate goal of receiving a high school diploma. While at Perth Amboy, I was awarded an Earthwatch Fellowship to Costa Rica to study the interaction between invertebrates and plants. I was involved in all phases of research, and analysis of the dynamics of a dry forest ecosystem.
While in Florida, I continued my association with the younger generation. I was an intake juvenile probation officer in a migrant farm worker town, working with a high percentage of Hispanic and Haitian families, where I occasionally needed to communicate in Spanish to non-English speaking parents. Also, I was a volunteer facilitator for SWAT (Students Working Against Tobacco).
For the last 3 years I have been a remedial teacher at Vance Elementary School in North Carolina. I provide math and reading instruction to small groups of at risk and low functioning/performing students, including ESL, for grades K-3 and 5.
In addition to the above, I have been a home instruction, and private tutor for over 20 years. I have covered many subjects, and worked with people of all ages and backgrounds.
