I've been tutoring or teaching English since I began college, in the fall of 2000. I began by working in my school's Writing Center. This job was accompanied by a class in which I studied conventions for academic writing.

Throughout college, I frequently helped my classmates and friends with their schoolwork. I most often worked with students on their writing skills. People would come to me because of my reputation for excellent grammar.

During my graduate school years, my job shifted from tutor to teacher. I worked as an instructor of first-year composition at Iowa State University. In that capacity, I taught classes of up to 26 students the conventions of academic writing. Our projects included a research paper and two analytical papers.

Most recently, I spent a year in South Korea teaching children at a private academy. My students ranged from pre-literate to advanced. When I wasn't at work, I spent a lot of time with my adult neighbors helping them practice their English. I recently completed a Certificate in TESOL from Seattle University.

As a teacher, I am energetic, positive, and focused. I help students set a goal for the session, and work hard with them to accomplish it. While I am driven to finish the tasks that we set out to complete, I do my best to keep sessions low-pressure. I use humor to keep the tone light, and can can be very flexible if a lesson proves to be more difficult than anticipated. On all levels, I do my best to help a student succeed on their own terms (or better, exceed their expectations).
