Tutoring Style and/or Experience
Much of a student’s problems with math lie not in his or her inability to grasp mathematical
concepts, but in learning the language of math. "Mathematicians are lazy” is a phrase often
heard in the scientific community. All of the notations and symbols and theorems with “foreign”
words are basically “shortcuts” since a mathematician hates to spend time and energy writing
their process out in actual words. I encourage my students to learn math as the language that it
truly is, and to understand how to communicate the subject matter in both "plain English" and
mathematical notation.
Personally, I adore math, and my enthusiasm does “rub off” on many of my students! And,
tutoring allows me to keep my mind sharp for my various research and consulting projects,
while performing a much needed service!
I tell many of my clients, "I am a mathematician, not a magician!" In order to make progress, a
student and parent must commit time and effort towards the goal. This includes making a
commitment to break old ineffective habits and replace with them with new ones, and showing
up consistently to tutoring sessions. Results depend on mutual commitment and collaboration.
A great tutor is best defined as a coach who knows how to bring out the true potential of a
student. That is my goal.
