Tutoring Style and/or Experience
The key to my tutoring is personalization. I think it is of the utmost importance to observe my students and understand how they think about the material in which I am tutoring them.
Before I make a plan of study, I first try to map out my student's train of thought, the way he looks at and works on the material. I then use that information to make a plan that uses his strengths and addresses his weaknesses. For example, I once had a student who seemed to always do well on the homework assignments that I gave her, but had trouble with practice exams. I realized that she was getting nervous during the examination, becoming distracted and losing focus. I helped her observe that anxiety and practice relaxation techniques. The way I personalize my tutoring can also be far more subtle, finding and using the techniques of problem solving that work for a certain student while ignoring the once that do not.
Furthermore, since I am still a student myself, I can relate to my students, empathize, and gain a clearer understanding of the way they think than I would otherwise.
