I have been a college advisor, taught conversational English in Japan, and have been a student of psychology for almost as long as I can remember.

I teach and tutor from a cross-discipline perspective. Learning can and should be fun; when something seems to difficult to understand it means that we as teachers are failing to make some connection. To fight that I try to take information or topics from a students interest and explain how a topic in psychology is similar or different. Rather than memorize a theory I want students to tell me why it matters to their daily life, once that can be done remembering the who when and where of an idea is simple.

All of this relies on learning being social. I take time to know the person I an tutoring rather than just the subject you need to pass. Because of this I often take on fewer students than other tutors but I hope they leave remembering that I was interested in their learning, not just a dollar.
