What I Offer:
Latin is a language that requires quite a lot of time and effort and is often taught in a highly artificial way. Students learn to think of Latin as a code for dissecting sentences rather than a vibrant language that was once spoken as easily as you and I speak English. While I cannot restructure your student's classroom, I do work hard to make the language more accessible to your student. As a matter of fact, making the Classical Languages more accessible to students is my professional goal.
Experience:
My own experience with the language is extensive, having spent 7 years working with it. In addition to my major in Classics, I also have a major in Linguistics. This has given me a special perspective on the way Romans spoke Latin and has proven invaluable when I explain particularities of Latin grammar to my peers.
Structure:
I am flexible as to the structure of meetings. I am willing to work with students online through Elite Tutors Online Inc., or face-to-face. The loose schedule for meetings is as follows: 1) Does the student have any questions about material covered in class? (It is helpful if the student keeps a small list somewhere of things he or she had trouble with or would like clarified). 2) Homework: were there any homework assignments the student struggled with? Go over these. 3) Vocabulary: build a flashcard stack of 'trouble' words and useful words. 4) Reading: This is something I will assign - short readings in Latin. These help make the language more vivid, and help students intuit Latin grammar and word order, just as they would if it were a 'normal' language. 5) Conversation: Each session I will attempt to incorporate 'conversational Latin'. This is of course a somewhat fabricated form of Latin as it is adopted for modern times, but nonetheless helps the brain create and quicken the paths between form and meaning.
