Tutoring Style and/or Experience
I have been tutoring neighborhood children for years, beginning with my brother and cousins. When I moved to Westchester, NY, I began babysitting for families in Bronxville, and naturally began tutoring the children I babysat. I joined America Reads as a tutor in 2006, and tutored a range of ages at the Yonkers Public Library for a year. The next year I was a tutor and classroom assistant at the Moshulu-Montefiore Community Center in the Bronx. In addition to reading, math and science, I have also tutored students in music.
I try to gently guide my students towards the correct answer as much as possible. I know from my own experience that the more autonomy I have, the better I learn. That feeling of success at having figured something out on my own (even when I was discreetly guided towards the answer) is a great motivator, and I try to use this as much as possible in my tutoring. However, some students require more explicit leading. I have experience tutoring students with a wide range of ability, and I easily adapt to the specific needs of each student. Specifically, I have experience with dyslexic students and students with a range of ADD symptoms. I am great at making students of all ages feel comfortable and getting them excited about success.
