Tutoring Style and/or Experience
I received my Bachelor's of Science degree in physics from the Georgia Institute of Technology with high honors. I also spent a year in graduate school at Brandeis University in Boston where I did work in the area of Biophysics. My main areas of study have been in the field of Biophysics where I worked on several projects with the most notable being: microrheology studies of hyaluronan's visco-elastic properties and image processing on negative stain electron microscopy images of synthetic fibrils to characterize their structure.
My teaching style focuses on developing a true understanding of the subject matter. I will not just help a student to solve a problem, but I will focus on a conceptual understanding. My hope is not to have the student learn from repetition, but to help them develop their critical thinking skills such that they can look at a problem and follow a logical step by step thought process to get to an answer.
My methods focus first on developing a conceptual understanding of the subject matter. Then shift the focus to leading the student through the problem solving process using typical problems one will in counter in the subject matter. I try to help guide them through a problem as opposed to solving the problem for them.
While I do lack formal experience, I have informally tutored numerous friends and fellow classmates in several areas of science, mathematics, and technology. With the most recent being tutoring my friend in his physics I material and helping out my fellow Biophysics PhD. students, with non-physics backgrounds, understand the mathematics in our classes. I also believe my having worked in several areas of science gives me an added advantage in teaching problem solving and critical thinking skills as well as a practical knowledge of science and mathematics.
