Tutor Personal Information

I received my M.A. in Special Education: Educational Therapy from California State University, Northridge in 1997. I have worked as an Educational Therapist and tutor for over ten years, with students ranging from elementary to high school. I work with students with dyslexia, ADHD, specific learning disabilities, and autism as well as students who simply need a little extra help and direction than they are able to receive in the classroom. My style and approach reflects my belief that each student is an individual and I treat each student as such. I do not focus on any one program, but rather use a wide variety of programs to meet each child's needs. Some of these include the Lindamood-Bell programs, Wilson Reading Program, Explode the Code, Touch Math, starfall.com, Inspiration as well as others. I believe in a multi-modality approach, which includes using the eyes for reading and seeing, the ears for hearing and listening, and when appropriate the hands and arms for using manipulatives, writing in the air or using a sand tray, for example. I constantly adjust my approach and the materials used based on the needs of the student.
I have helped many students learn to read where the school has not. I have also been successful in the areas of math up through Algebra; written expression including writing essays and research papers, spelling and organizational skills. I also work with students on the middle and high school levels learn how to read the information in the textbook, decide what is important, organize that information, study for tests, and research, organize and write research papers.
