Tutoring Style and/or Experience
I believe that students best appreciate the power and utility of writing when they are encouraged to see it as a tool for sustained inquiry into complex issues that are both important and relevant to their lives. My students learn how to improve their writing as they search for answers to a series of related questions that require complex, well-informed answers. It is during this process of inquiry that my students become writing scholars -- people who address real questions and problems, who study and research in an attempt to find answers, and who teach what they have learned in clear and engaging ways. And, since reading is an essential element in the scholarly exchange of ideas, I have worked very hard to develop ways of integrating reading and writing and of helping students to see that both are essential, complementary aspects of inquiry. My approach, while traditional in many ways, often has a revolutionary effect: the learners become active, contributing scholars who are no longer mere students; they become philosophers and critics engaged in the communal practices of philosophy and criticism.
