From the children of the elementary to junior high school levels, and from the young adults of college to the retired, I can affirm that I have tutored quite a diverse set of people. Yet while their backgrounds and ages have varied, I noticed that the root cause of all their obstacles to learning has remained constant. Whether they were 14, 21, or 65, I always found that the students who had the most difficulty were the ones that I discovered to lack a solid understanding of the fundamentals of whatever subject they were trying to learn. Therefore, it is my practice to take a very comprehensive, bottom-up approach to tutoring. One that emphasizes educating the student in the target subject from the basics upward, making absolutely no assumptions as to what has been learned previously. Only after the student has developed automaticity with the basics do I move on to the more advanced topics. In this way, undertaking the task of educating someone is similar to constructing a house. The structure must be built from the ground up, and a solid foundation is integral, if the house is to stand.
