Tutor Personal Information

Name: Adam F.
Gender: Male   Age: 26-30
Tutoring Style and/or Experience

I graduated Summa Cum Laude in both Philosophy and Psychology, earning two academic scholarships during my studies. I was also voted Outstanding Senior of the Year by the faculty in the Philosophy department. By the time I graduated I had completed coursework up to and including third semester Calculus, as well as extensive coursework in English and creative writing. I also served as assistant editor for the student publication Calliope for two years. After graduation I took the GRE (the equivalent of the SAT for graduate school) and scored in the 99th percentile. Recently, I worked full-time as a Teacher/Counselor for troubled youths; at present I'm tutoring part-time and, in collaboration with a team of graduate students, preparing a manuscript for publication.

Your choice to tutor with me will be rewarded not only with a better test score or grade, but confidence, understanding, and a sense of accomplishment. I recognize that everyone has a different learning history and is coming to the table with unique strengths, difficulties, and goals. Therefore whatever your age or level of ability, you can be sure that I will listen to you and cater my tutoring to your individual need. If you're feeling lost and would like to start at the beginning, I can provide direction, structure, and lead you down the quickest path to your goal. On the other hand, if you know where you are and would like help with some particular problem areas, I will answer any questions you have, provide support, and demonstrate step-by-step solutions. In short, I believe that tutoring is an interactive process, and I will be regularly assessing your satisfaction and our progress towards your goal.

I also believe that there is no limit to the amount of progress you can make. Your goal can be a near-perfect score, a passing grade, or anything in between -- whatever the case may be, in time we'll get there. There is no mystery or magic to becoming a great writer, problem-solver, or insightful reader. All it takes is practice and a good mentor! In particular, it is a common misunderstanding that the SAT and GRE (along with the ACT) measure intelligence. In truth, the SAT and GRE are simply very large exams that include question content from more than one subject area. And sure enough, just as with any exam, the people who do well on the SAT and GRE are the people who have studied... and the more you study, the better you'll do! I will help you to maximize the effectiveness of your studying by offering you guidance and teaching you strategies, tips and tricks that will accelerate your learning and improve your score.

I will be the teacher you always wanted -- making things simple and easy whenever possible, and telling you exactly what you need to know to succeed. For every problem we solve together, I will show you how to generalize your knowledge so that you can solve ten kinds of problems just like it. I also understand that confidence and positive thinking can be just as important to your success as practice and know-how. This is why I will encourage you when you are struggling, congratulate you on your successes, provide you with constructive feedback, and give you a workable approach for every kind of problem so you feel prepared and can do your best.
