Tutoring Style and/or Experience
Tutoring Style: Learning to learn because learning should be fun! My students laugh, A LOT, and enjoy learning. My background allows me to be a multi-subject tutor so multiple subjects can be covered in one tutoring session. I make learned concepts real to life by teaching your student using information that they enjoy hearing about like sports, vehicles, pop stars, glamour, etc. All tutoring curriculum is individually created and based on your students’ needs and interests, therefore all tutoring starts with an assessment of your students’ skills and weaknesses in your area of choice.
Most students are exceptionally smart but do not know how to learn, how to study, how to test, or how to most effectively use their time. Students switching schools, or even taking one sick day can miss important concepts, leading to a continued hitch in their ability to succeed within a given subject. Math, science, grammar, foreign language, reading comprehension, and some social studies courses are all “layered” in order to build upon the students knowledge, but if the foundation is not present, then the building of knowledge will come crashing down time after time.
Fight or Flight: In addition your student often experiences an anxiety related “fight or flight” response when they are faced with a challenge that they do not believe they can overcome based on previous experience. Education is no different.
With every tutoring session I raise test scores, self-confidence, and grades, as well as teach your student techniques to cope when they are feeling stressed out about learning a new concept, completing homework, or taking a test.
My 12 years of tutoring experience have given me experience teaching in the following areas: SAT Prep, ACT Prep, Special Education (PreK-12) in all subject areas including English, reading comprehension, math (basic, K-8, Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Trigonometry, Geometry, and Statistics), science, social studies, ESL, and more!
Basics: BA in Sociology with a focus in Human Development/Socialization; MS in Mental Health Pending 2010. Masters level credits in Special Education. Certified, fingerprinted, and background checked teacher with the state of WA.
